Switzerland Defeats Canada to Top Group B at 2026 World Cup
Switzerland confirmed their status as Group B favorites at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by defeating Canada in a crucial group stage encounter, securing first place in the group. This achievement grants the Swiss team extra preparation time ahead of their Round of 16 match and spares them from exhausting travel, allowing them to play their knockout game in Vancouver.
Coach Murat Yakin made significant changes to the starting lineup following Switzerland’s victory over Bosnia, handing starts to Ruben Vargas, Djibril Sow, and 20-year-old Johan Manzambi, who had already scored twice in the tournament. Early on, Switzerland missed a golden opportunity when Breel Embolo failed to convert a one-on-one chance. Canada, content with a draw to maintain their group lead, responded with sharp attacks led by Kyle Larin, but goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was flawless in goal.
Switzerland took the lead immediately after the break. In the 46th minute, Manzambi made a solo run down the right flank and delivered a precise cross to the far post, where Vargas powerfully struck the ball into the bottom corner. Eleven minutes later, Embolo drew three defenders before threading a delicate pass to Manzambi, who finished to double Switzerland’s advantage.
Canada reignited the contest in the 76th minute thanks to a goal from substitute Promise David, who capitalized on a positional error by Nico Elvedi. Despite a late surge from the home side, Switzerland’s defense, marshaled by Kobel, withstood intense pressure from the crowd to preserve the victory.
Canada will now travel to Los Angeles to face the second-placed team from Group A, most likely South Korea. Switzerland’s next opponent will be one of the third-placed teams from the group stage.
