Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk rejoined Liverpool’s squad later than his compatriot Ryan Gravenberch, who also participated in the 2026 World Cup. The Dutch international explained that he needed a few extra days to fully recover.

“I needed a proper break, both physically and mentally. After such an intense tournament and a demanding season, it was crucial to completely recharge in order to return at full capacity. Performing at the highest level requires enormous energy, and sometimes a couple of extra days of rest can be more beneficial than an early return to training. Now, I feel refreshed, energized, and ready to help the Reds achieve all their goals,” van Dijk told L’Equipe.
