History has a way of repeating itself at the most inconvenient moments. Twenty-eight years after their painful defeat at the 1998 World Cup, Scotland once again found themselves thwarted by a Moroccan fortress on football’s biggest stage, going down 1-0.

The match got off to a nightmare start for the Scots at Boston Stadium. Before the crowd had even settled into their seats, Morocco’s Atlas Lions struck. In just the second minute, Ismail Saibari caught goalkeeper Angus Gunn off guard with a precise finish to give Morocco an early lead.

That lightning-quick goal forced Scotland to abandon their pre-match strategy. They had no choice but to push forward and chase possession. However, breaking down Morocco’s mobile and technically gifted midfield proved a daunting task. The African side dominated the middle of the park, controlling the tempo and snuffing out every Scottish attempt to impose their game.

In the second half, Scotland manager Steve Clarke tried to turn the tide with a series of substitutions. The Scots responded by pressing forward, and the stands, awash in dark blue, roared continuously in support.

There were moments when Scotland looked capable of salvaging something. Lyndon Dykes battled fiercely inside Yassine Bounou’s penalty area, while Andrew Robertson worked tirelessly down the left flank, even picking up a yellow card in a tough challenge. Yet clear-cut chances remained sparse. Morocco, marshalled by the experienced Achraf Hakimi, defended with cool composure and organization, regularly launching dangerous counterattacks. In the dying moments, El Aynaoui had a chance to seal the game but his shot went wide.

The final whistle confirmed a narrow but deserved victory for Morocco, 1-0. Group C now looks set for a thrilling conclusion. Scotland, who had the opportunity to top the group after beating Haiti, must now carefully calculate their options ahead of a decisive third-round clash with Brazil. Meanwhile, Morocco will aim to continue their winning streak when they face Haiti next.
