Draymond Green Calls for Strict Sanctions in Kawhi Leonard’s Salary Cap Case

Draymond Green, forward for the Golden State Warriors, has called for strict penalties in the case involving Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers. Leonard is reportedly linked to a $28 million payment through the company Aspiration, which may have circumvented the NBA salary cap.
Green revealed that another company has emerged in connection with Leonard. This unnamed sponsorship deal is believed to be worth millions and was allegedly intended as an additional incentive for Leonard to join the Clippers while bypassing the salary cap restrictions.
“We keep hearing about what the punishment will be. I would say this: if the punishment isn’t severe, then everyone should do the same. If it’s just a slap on the wrist, then let everyone handle it that way, and every player should try to do the same. If this is really the case, I’m not mad at Kawhi. I think this raises a different question than what everyone is currently discussing,” Green stated on his podcast, The Draymond Green Show.
He went on to challenge the concept of the salary cap itself. “We’re playing in a league where a team was just sold for $12.5 billion, even though only 14 months ago it sold for $10 billion. In baseball, there is no salary cap. The league’s system ensures that players who deserve the majority of the money get it, and those who don’t, don’t. It’s that simple.
I believe this is a much bigger issue that needs to be addressed. Right now, everyone is saying, ‘Oh my God, what will happen to Kawhi? Will the trade go through? What will the punishment be?’ Let the punishment be the abolition of the salary cap. If you can make $2.5 billion in a year just by selling a team, why do we even need a salary cap?”
