The Greek national basketball team will face Ukraine and Spain without the presence of NBA star Giannis Adetokunbo.
The squad is set to face a challenging test in the qualifiers for the 2027 Basketball World Cup, as their key player will be absent from the roster.
Adetokunbo’s absence is due to a request from his franchise, the Miami Heat. The organization wants him to return to the United States as early as possible to join their preseason training schedule ahead of the 2026/27 regular season. This decision follows a difficult 2025/26 season, in which he played only 36 games and missed all action from mid-March onward due to injuries.
Greece will hold its first training session on August 14. These preparations will include two warm-up friendly matches at the Telekom Center Athens, facing Poland on August 22 and Cyprus on August 24.
Following these exhibition games, the team will travel to Riga to compete against Ukraine on August 28. Three days later, they will return to Athens to host a strong Spanish side on August 31.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian national team will also begin preparations on August 14 in Latvia, where they will play two friendly matches against the University of Arizona team and the Latvian national team.
Tickets for the Ukraine vs. Greece match on August 28 in Riga are already available for purchase. Ukrainian fans are encouraged to support their national team in one of the crucial qualifiers for the 2027 World Cup.
