Investigative journalist Pablo Torre revealed that forward Kawai Leonard was paid $672,000 for a one-hour meeting with military personnel. This event was part of the Los Angeles Clippers’ scheme to circumvent the NBA salary cap. The social media post about the meeting received only 119 likes, which Torre interprets as an indication that the event was relatively small.
Leonard’s representatives continue to maintain that he was unaware of the illegal scheme for which the NBA found the Clippers responsible. Following the investigation, the league determined that the club had provided Leonard with off-court income through contracts with at least four affiliated companies: Aspiration Partners, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics, and Lockton Insurance. These companies collectively paid Leonard a total of $18 million up until 2021. The league fined Leonard himself only $700,000.
During the offseason, Leonard was traded to the Toronto Raptors as part of a player exchange.
