A new basketball club in Rome, created to participate in the NBA’s European project, will be named “Roma SPQR,” according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The acronym SPQR stands for Senatus Populusque Romanus, which translates from Latin as “The Senate and People of Rome.” This ancient symbol represented the authority of the Roman Republic and remains a key emblem of the city today.
The ownership group of the club from Italy’s capital is led by former NBA executive Donnie Nelson. Among the key investors is Luka Dončić, the guard for the Los Angeles Lakers.
