Alexia Thainara picked up the biggest win of her UFC career at UFC Fight Night 284, defeating former strawweight title challenger Amanda Lemos by unanimous decision. The scorecards read 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27, although the fight itself was considerably more competitive than the final card suggests. Lemos had strong moments with her boxing and landed some of the cleaner power shots, but Thainara’s ability to control the fight along the fence and stay active in the clinch ultimately gave her the edge over 15 minutes.

Thainara looked to make the fight uncomfortable from the opening bell. She used kicks early, closed the distance and repeatedly pushed Lemos toward the cage, where she could work with knees and short punches. Lemos handled the pressure well at first and found her own opportunities in the exchanges. A low blow from Thainara briefly stopped the action, but once the fight resumed, both women continued throwing with real intent. Thainara’s left hook was one of her better weapons early, while Lemos remained dangerous whenever she had enough space to let her hands go.

The second round was probably Lemos’ best stretch of the fight. She opened with a front kick before finding success with her right hand and combinations. At one point, Lemos landed a clean right that wobbled Thainara, forcing the younger Brazilian to immediately tie up in the clinch and buy herself time to recover. That was an important moment, because Thainara could easily have been in serious trouble if she had stayed at striking range. Instead, she survived the storm, regained her composure and eventually answered with a takedown late in the round.

Thainara’s work against the fence became increasingly important as the fight went on. She wasn’t necessarily dominating every striking exchange, but she repeatedly found ways to stop Lemos from fighting at her preferred distance. The third round followed that pattern, with Thainara landing to the body and head before clinching and controlling Lemos along the cage. Lemos eventually broke free with less than a minute remaining and started throwing heavy punches, but by then she needed a much bigger change in momentum to turn the fight around.

The final statistics and scorecards tell an interesting story. Lemos appeared to have the cleaner moments in several of the open striking exchanges, but Thainara was more consistent at forcing her style onto the fight. Her clinch work, pressure and ability to keep Lemos occupied along the fence made the difference in what was otherwise a very competitive matchup. One judge saw the fight completely in Thainara’s favor, scoring all three rounds for her, while the other two gave Lemos one round apiece.

For Thainara, the victory is a major step forward. She improved to 4-0 inside the UFC and added the name of a former title challenger to her résumé. The win also strengthens her position in a crowded strawweight division, where she entered the fight ranked No. 12. Lemos, meanwhile, showed that she can still be dangerous against a rising contender, particularly when she gets her boxing going, but she couldn’t maintain enough control of the fight to overcome Thainara’s pressure and clinch work.
