The atmosphere inside Belgrade Arena was electric as hometown favorite Miloš Janičić made his walk to the Octagon, but the celebration didn’t last long. French prospect Noah Gugnon spoiled the party in emphatic fashion, needing just 1:21 of the opening round to secure a rear-naked choke and earn the biggest victory of his young career. It was a stunning finish that immediately established Gugnon as a fighter to watch in the UFC’s lightweight division.

Janičić entered the fight carrying plenty of momentum and the support of thousands of Serbian fans. Known for his aggressive style and knockout power, he looked eager to set a fast pace from the opening bell. Gugnon, however, never allowed the fight to develop on the feet. He stayed composed, closed the distance early, and immediately forced a grappling exchange that completely changed the direction of the contest. Rather than getting caught up in the emotion of the moment, the Frenchman stuck to a disciplined game plan and refused to give the hometown fighter any room to build confidence.

The decisive sequence unfolded almost instantly. During a scramble, Janičić suffered an apparent leg injury while attempting to defend the takedown, leaving him unable to escape Gugnon’s control. Recognizing the opportunity, Gugnon quickly moved to his opponent’s back and secured both hooks before locking in a tight rear-naked choke. With no realistic avenue to escape and the pressure tightening by the second, Janičić was forced to submit just over a minute into the fight. It was a clinical finish that highlighted Gugnon’s composure and submission instincts.

Although the injury played a role in how the fight unfolded, Gugnon deserves credit for capitalizing immediately. Many fighters hesitate when unexpected situations arise, but he transitioned smoothly, maintained control, and never gave Janičić an opportunity to recover. The finish showcased a mature approach from a fighter making one of the biggest appearances of his career and demonstrated why his grappling has become one of his greatest strengths.

For Gugnon, the victory marks a dream start to his UFC journey. Defeating a dangerous local favorite on enemy territory is never an easy task, especially in front of a passionate crowd, yet the French lightweight handled the pressure with remarkable confidence. Janičić will undoubtedly have opportunities to bounce back once healthy, but on this night the spotlight belonged entirely to Noah Gugnon, whose quick submission victory became one of the standout performances of UFC Fight Night 283.
