Milan head coach Ruben Amorim admitted that he gave his team “more freedom” in their recent match against Lecce. The Rossoneri secured a convincing 3-0 victory in that game.
“I believe we have significantly improved our performance,” Amorim told DAZN Italia. “Allowing players more freedom in their movements, especially making runs behind the defenders, enables us to be not just a possession-based team but one that poses a real threat to opponents.
We had plenty of space to exploit with those runs, which was positive. We controlled the match well, aware that the opposition was waiting for us to make mistakes, but our defense held strong and we deserved the win.
Why did I give the players more freedom? A coach, particularly at a big club, always listens to the players, observes and understands them. Every player wants to develop the game according to their own character, and if you want to have your own style, it’s challenging. What I felt in recent matches was similar to my experience at Manchester United, and I cannot afford to make the same mistake twice. Sometimes we don’t have the ideal qualities for a certain style of play, and if that’s the case, we must adapt.
Against Lecce, everything worked well. In other games, we might revert to building attacks through three players. It’s important to have different options. This is especially crucial in Italy, where coaches are very experienced.”
