Ecuador vs Curaçao Sets World Cup Record for Most Shots on Target Without a Goal
We previously reported that Curaçao national team goalkeeper Eloy Room made 15 saves, securing the debutants their first ever point at a World Cup. His efforts helped the team hold Ecuador to a 0-0 draw. In the process, Room set a new World Cup record for the most saves made during regular time.
However, Room’s heroics also contributed to an unfortunate new World Cup record. Throughout the match, both teams combined for 18 shots on target, yet the fans were left without a single goal to celebrate.
Before this, the dubious record belonged to the 1978 World Cup match between the Netherlands and Peru. In that game, the teams managed a total of 14 shots on target and also ended in a goalless draw, 0-0.
