The FIFA World Cup always shines a spotlight on brand-new stars. Yet there is another category of players—those whose names were already known or heard of but hadn’t attracted much attention until their performances at the tournament made everyone take notice.

Here, we focus on five such footballers who emerged from the 2026 World Cup with their reputations significantly enhanced.

Nathaniel Brown (Germany)

The left-back for Germany is well-known in the Bundesliga, having been Nürnberg’s standout player in the 2025/26 season. However, he only began to appear on the international stage late last year when he made his debut for the German national team. This spring, interest around him grew, with Bayern Munich showing intent to sign him and Julian Nagelsmann considering him a key figure for the national side.

Brown truly made his mark at the World Cup. Well, sort of—he scored and assisted in the match against Curaçao, a game where scoring was easier than failing to find the net. He was less impressive against Ivory Coast and missed the Ecuador game due to injury. The overall impression is mixed, but the buzz is undeniable. At 23, Brown is currently one of the most talked-about defenders worldwide and will start the new season at Bayern, who have agreed a €55 million transfer with Eintracht Frankfurt. Brown himself is fully on board with this career move.

Joan Manzambi (Switzerland)

Few expected 20-year-old Manzambi to become Switzerland’s top scorer at the World Cup, especially since he began the tournament on the bench and only made brief appearances at first. Yet the central midfielder from Freiburg displayed such a hunger for goals that the football world collectively asked: “Who is this player?” In the Bosnia match, he scored twice in just 20 minutes. After that, coach Murat Yakin promoted him to the starting lineup, and Manzambi found the net again against Canada.

This young talent has effectively secured his immediate future. Newcastle United are already interested, but there is a strong sense that a more prestigious club with Champions League ambitions will come calling. Manzambi is tenacious, intelligent, and unfazed by high-pressure situations. Any club lucky enough to sign him will be gaining a real asset.

Chrisencio Summerville (Netherlands)

At just 24 years old, Summerville has spent six years in the English Premier League, albeit with clubs facing more struggles than success—first Leeds United, then West Ham United. He experienced relegation to the Championship with both teams. His next destination remains uncertain, but Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, and Manchester United are among the suitors interested in this dynamic and decisive left winger.

Before the World Cup, none of these clubs had seriously considered him. However, Ronald Koeman immediately included Summerville in the starting XI, and the winger performed as if he were a seasoned veteran of the Oranje. He scored one of the Netherlands’ two goals against Japan and played a key role in their demolition of Sweden. Since then, top scouts have turned their attention to him. At the World Cup, Summerville earned the second-highest rating in the Dutch squad after Cody Gakpo. His shots may be few, but nearly every attempt is a lethal threat to opponents. For the past two weeks, Summerville has been living the life of a genuine star.

Mateo Chávez (Mexico)

Son of former Mexico international Paulo César Chávez, nicknamed “Tilon,” whose own career was marked by personal heartbreak—he was in the preliminary squad for the 1998 World Cup but missed out on the final list. Mateo’s goal at the 2026 World Cup was portrayed by the media as a “family revenge,” especially poignant as his father watched from the stands and was moved to tears. It was a touching moment.

It’s already clear that Mateo is forging a more successful career than his father, who never played outside Mexico. Mateo currently plays for a modest European club, AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, but this is just the beginning. The coming weeks will reveal what lies ahead. At the tournament, Mateo scored his first goal for Mexico, sparking a rout of the Czech Republic. His performance was outstanding: he sprinted from his own half unnoticed, received a pass in the center circle, evaded his marker, faced the goalkeeper one-on-one, and calmly placed the ball into the far corner. He was named man of the match, and Brighton immediately expressed interest in bringing him to the Premier League. Time will tell how that transfer develops.

Alex Freeman (USA)

Another son of a sporting legend, though not a footballer but an American football star. His father, Antonio Freeman, was a well-known receiver and Super Bowl champion with the Green Bay Packers. Twenty-one-year-old Alex has inherited his father’s imposing stature (standing 188 cm tall) but chose a different sport. He is a versatile player with good attacking instincts, pace, and aerial ability. His talent has been recognized for some time, but under Mauricio Pochettino’s guidance, he has truly blossomed.

Operating on the right side of defense, Freeman is an indispensable figure for the US national team. Under Pochettino, he became the youngest player in US history to start six consecutive matches. At the World Cup, only Christian Pulisic received higher ratings than him in the squad. Freeman registered an assist against Paraguay and then scored against Australia in a manner his father would have appreciated: battling physically, heading the ball, and overpowering both defender and goalkeeper. Reports say this impressed not only his father but also Diego Simeone, who quickly expressed interest in signing Freeman, who has been playing since January right next door to Atlético Madrid at Villarreal.
