Frenkie de Jong Criticizes Netherlands’ Tactical Plan in Morocco Defeat
One of the Netherlands national team’s key players, Frenkie de Jong, openly criticized the tactical approach used against Morocco. The European side was eliminated from the tournament in the round of 16 after losing on penalties.
“I feel empty inside. We played poorly,” de Jong admitted. “We were outnumbered in midfield. It was very difficult with only two midfielders.”
Over the course of 120 minutes, the Netherlands managed to generate just 0.24 expected goals.
“I’m disappointed, but it was the coach’s plan, and we did everything we could to execute it. They had more possession,” de Jong reflected on the defeat.
