Infantino Defends Mandatory Water Breaks Introduced for World Cup 2026
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has once again commented on the mandatory water breaks introduced for the 2026 World Cup. He believes that these stoppages played a crucial role in England’s victory over Congo in the round of 16.
“After intense starts to both halves, the England team made effective use of the water breaks to regroup, reorganize, and launch their attacks, scoring two goals in the final 15 minutes,” Infantino explained. “These breaks are extremely important as they allow players to rest during the tournament.”
He added that the pauses also give coaches the opportunity to communicate directly with their players during every match—not just based on weather conditions.
It is worth recalling that water breaks were introduced ahead of the 2026 World Cup and are implemented midway through each half.
