Japan Prepares for Potential Penalty Shootout Against Brazil in World Cup Playoff
Japan’s head coach Hajime Moriyasu shared his thoughts ahead of his team’s World Cup 2026 playoff clash against Brazil, scheduled to kick off at 17:00 UTC.
“When it comes to the FIFA rankings, Brazil sits at the top, while Japan is positioned much lower — that’s the reality,” Moriyasu responded when asked if he considered Japan the underdog in this matchup. “Our ambition is to win the World Cup, but we’ve never competed at this level before. Naturally, some view us as already performing well.”
Looking ahead, Moriyasu emphasized that every new opportunity strengthens their belief in victory. “We truly believe we have a chance. That’s what drives us.”
He acknowledged Brazil’s dominant style of play: “Brazil always takes the initiative. They have excellent chances to win. Some will say Japan is the underdog. We will play with that in mind. We respect our opponents, but we also have the opportunity to win — and to make history.”
Moriyasu also confirmed that his squad is prepared for the possibility of a penalty shootout.
“If the moment comes when a shootout becomes likely, I will determine the order of penalty takers. Unlike last time, when players volunteered, I will personally decide who will take the shots.”
