Lukaku Explains Why He Deferred Belgium’s Decisive Senegal Penalty
Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku has spoken out about the penalty awarded in the 120+5th minute of the World Cup round of 16 match against Senegal.
It was an incredibly dramatic moment in a game that Senegal appeared to be comfortably winning, only to concede two goals in stoppage time. Then, in the very last moments of extra time, Senegal conceded a penalty against themselves — a decisive moment that paved the way for Belgium to advance to the quarterfinals.
“Since I am still going through a difficult psychological period, I preferred that Youri take the penalty,” Lukaku told FIFA’s official website. The Belgian captain Youri Tielemans stepped up to take the spot-kick and did not miss, effectively ending Senegal’s hopes.
