Marseille Sidelines Captain Hauberg Amidst Urgent Debt Crisis
Marseille is urgently seeking funds to settle debts that could lead to the relegation of the renowned French club.
They had the opportunity to raise money by selling Danish defensive midfielder and club captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg to English side Newcastle for €17.5 million.
However, the 31-year-old midfielder declined a return to England, where he previously played for Tottenham.
According to AFP, Marseille has decided to punish the Danish player by stripping him of the captain’s armband. As a result, American forward Timothy Weah will lead the team in the upcoming friendly match against Madrid’s Atlético.
It is worth recalling that Højbjerg has made 75 appearances for Marseille in total, scoring eight goals and providing nine assists.
