Martinez Says Portugal Benefited from Opening World Cup Setback
Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martínez expressed his satisfaction following his team’s dominant 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the second group stage match of the 2026 World Cup. This result came after Portugal’s disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening game.
Martínez commented, “This was our response to the setback in the first match. Sometimes, you need a game like the opener to grow throughout the tournament. Today, we saw a team with the same determination and commitment but with greater maturity, as this was no longer the initial fixture. I am very pleased with the outcome,” according to FIFA’s official website.
Currently, Portugal sits second in Group K and will contest the top spot in a crucial head-to-head clash against Colombia on June 28.
