Mbappé Equals Messi’s World Cup Goal Tally After Sweden Match
Following Kylian Mbappé’s brilliant performance against Sweden, the French captain has caught up with Lionel Messi in the World Cup top scorers list. Both now have six goals each, although Messi has yet to play his round of 16 match.
Trailing them is Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, who scored the decisive goal against Ivory Coast yesterday, bringing his total to five goals. Brazil’s Vinicius Junior and France’s Ousmane Dembélé each have four goals to their names. Thirteen players have scored three goals apiece, five of whom have already been eliminated from the tournament, while three others—England’s Harry Kane, Congo’s Yoan Vissa, and Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr—still have the chance to add to their tallies today.
It’s worth recalling that in the previous World Cup, the race for the Golden Boot was also contested between Mbappé and Messi. The French forward finished with eight goals, while the Argentine ended the tournament with seven.
