Patrick Sikut Chooses to Represent Ukraine at U19 European Championship
Ukraine U19 international Patrick Sikut has shared his experiences representing the national team. Currently, he is competing for the “yellow-blues” at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship.
“I was born in London. Before the full-scale invasion, I visited Ukraine many times, as my grandmother, grandfather, and other relatives live there. I used to spend about two months each year in Ukraine. Recently, I traveled there to sort out my passport. It was nice to see many family members.
During my last visit to Ukraine, I witnessed shelling. Russia launched a massive attack on Kyiv. I was in Brovary, my hometown. It was a terrifying day for me and my mother. My grandparents, however, have grown accustomed to it. It was something awful, something I will never forget. It’s very sad to see this. I can’t imagine how people live there, forced to fear for their lives every day. It’s truly horrible. I hope it ends soon.
But that is not a reason to avoid choosing Ukraine. My parents are from Ukraine and Poland, so I still feel connected to both countries. I’m proud to represent both national teams, and perhaps it’s a good problem when two countries compete for you. Regardless, I have now chosen Ukraine for the European Championship. I am focused on that. I’m not thinking about other countries or clubs right now. I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent Ukraine, I want the best for the team, and I hope to win as many matches as possible.
My main football strength is seeing certain passes—and executing them. Coaches often tell me they themselves didn’t spot those passes. I see what others miss,” Sikut told the Ukrainian Association of Football website.
