Shakhtar Confirms Talks with Brentford to Host Champions League Matches in London
Shakhtar Donetsk is in talks with several stadiums in the United Kingdom and Germany to secure venues for their European fixtures in the upcoming season, according to Evening Standard.
The Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford is being considered as a potential home ground for Shakhtar’s Champions League matches next season.
The source highlights Brentford’s strong connections to Ukraine, noting that significant Ukrainian communities reside in the nearby areas of Hounslow and Ealing. The club has also been involved in local initiatives supporting families of Ukrainian refugees.
Due to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Shakhtar is unable to host their Champions League home games in their homeland. UEFA has prohibited the club from staging European matches in war-affected Ukraine for safety reasons. Last season, Shakhtar played their home fixtures in the Europa Conference League in Krakow, Poland.
A Shakhtar spokesperson told Standard Sport, “Currently, Shakhtar is negotiating with several stadiums in the UK and Germany to secure a venue for UEFA Champions League matches next season. We will not comment on this process until a decision is announced in the near future.”
It is worth recalling that Shakhtar will begin their Champions League campaign at the group stage, which kicks off on 8 September.
