The Sunday evening schedule at the 2026 World Cup will kick off with the match between Spain and Saudi Arabia.
Luis de la Fuente’s side failed to secure a win against Cape Verde, settling for a 0-0 draw despite dominating possession throughout the game. This result left fans feeling a sense of unfinished business. Spain cannot afford another slip-up, especially with their toughest group opponent, Uruguay, awaiting them in the final round. The pressure is immense, considering Spain’s recent World Cup struggles—they were eliminated in the round of 16 in the last two tournaments and failed to progress beyond the group stage in 2014.
Saudi Arabia also began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Uruguay. This outcome keeps Georgios Donis’ team in contention for a place in the knockout stages, even if they lose to Spain. Ultimately, their fate will be decided in the final group match against Cape Verde.
It’s worth noting that these two teams previously met at the 2006 World Cup, where Spain secured a 1-0 victory in the group stage. Additionally, the “Furia Roja” have won both of their friendly encounters against Saudi Arabia.
