Srna: Shakhtar Endured Hardship but Maintained Its Identity
Shakhtar Donetsk’s sporting director, Dario Srna, spoke to the Spanish outlet Marca about the club’s performances during the 2025/26 season. Under the guidance of Arda Turan, Shakhtar reclaimed the Ukrainian Premier League title and reached the semifinals of the UEFA Conference League.
Srna described the season as highly significant for Shakhtar. “Winning the championship and advancing to the semifinals of a European competition under the current circumstances fills us with pride. People often focus only on the results, but behind them lie tremendous sacrifices. We are not playing in Donetsk, constantly traveling and living amid wartime conditions, yet the club continues to compete at the highest level. That alone speaks volumes about Shakhtar.”
He acknowledged the severe impact the club has endured but emphasized that Shakhtar has never lost its identity. “Of course, we aim to return to the Champions League, to compete with the best clubs and develop players of the highest calibre. However, achieving this amid war is an enormous challenge. Today, every success carries a much deeper meaning because it brings pride and hope to the people of Ukraine,” Srna concluded.
