Ticket Scandal in New York: FIFA Halts Illegal Lottery by Congressional Candidate
U.S. Congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier came under scrutiny from FIFA due to an unauthorized raffle of World Cup tickets. The politician promised to raffle first-category tickets for the England vs. Panama match among those who worked at least ten shifts in her election campaign. However, FIFA strictly blocked this initiative, reminding that the rules prohibit using tickets for contests and advertising.
The scandal also involved New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who supported Chevalier. Earlier, he himself organized a similar lottery, and over the weekend personally attended the Brazil vs. Morocco match with exclusive tickets, which sparked criticism.
The mayor’s representative Dora Pekech defended him, stating: “The mayor will attend certain matches in his official capacity to fulfill the functions of the host city leader.”
