Today, 44-year-old Serena Williams will make her return to the Wimbledon singles court. The American star is set to face Maiya Joyn on Centre Court this evening. This marks her first singles appearance since the 2022 US Open.
“Success for me is simply stepping onto the court. I never expected to be here,” Williams told BBC Sport.
“I hesitated at first, but then I thought, ‘I really need to take this opportunity.’ Who knows if I’ll ever get another chance? Maybe this is it. And then I thought, ‘What’s wrong with you, Serena? What are you thinking? Are you crazy?’ I have a wonderful chance to show what I do best.”
It’s worth noting that the age record for singles at Wimbledon is held by Martina Navratilova, who played her final singles match at 47 years old.
