Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné undergoes surgery after World Cup leg fracture
Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné has undergone surgery to repair fractures to his left tibia and fibula. The 24-year-old, who recently completed his debut season with Italian side Sassuolo, suffered the serious injury following a reckless challenge from behind by Assima Madibo in the 51st minute of Canada’s emphatic 6-0 victory over Qatar.
The Canadian Soccer Association confirmed that the operation took place on Thursday evening. Madibo, who was shown a red card for the foul, personally apologized to Koné after the match. Meanwhile, the injured midfielder expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of support on social media, pledging to assist the team from the sidelines in a coaching capacity and vowing to return to the pitch as soon as possible.
