Daniel Maldini, the forward for Cagliari and the Italy national team, has tested negative for drug use following a car accident last week. Earlier reports suggested that banned substances had been found in his bloodstream.
Maldini had his driving license confiscated after failing a breathalyzer test. Initial reports in Italy also indicated that he had not passed a preliminary drug test.
The preliminary screening was carried out by the Milan local police using a saliva swab, which does not have legal standing. However, this prompted the authorities to take a blood sample from him for further analysis at a hospital.
Comprehensive tests conducted last week confirmed that the player had not consumed any drugs.
