Newcastle United’s Sporting Director Ross Wilson has revealed that the club had no plans to sell Bruno Guimarães, but the “very emotional” captain himself wanted to move to Arsenal. The Premier League champions are now close to finalizing a £75 million deal to acquire the midfielder.
Although Wilson admitted that Guimarães’ departure was “disappointing,” he emphasized that the 28-year-old no longer wished to “play here.”
“We had to weigh all the pros and cons, considering that Bruno, showing us great respect and emotion, effectively made it clear that he wanted to leave and move on.
That doesn’t mean he could just leave, but it certainly influences our decisions when we reach a certain price range.
It’s not accurate to say this was part of our strategy and that we planned to sell Bruno this summer — that’s not the case. But we have to be flexible and respond to what’s happening,” Wilson told BBC Sport.
