Olivier Giroud: France Must Secure Six Points Before Facing Norway

Former France striker Olivier Giroud has shared his expectations for the national team’s start at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that Les Bleus need a strong opening to their campaign.

France will begin the tournament against Senegal, and Giroud believes the team has all the necessary qualities to compete for success. However, he warned that talent alone will not be enough and that the players must create their own legacy.

“Everything is there for success, but the question is whether it will come together on the pitch. They have everything they need in defense, midfield, and attack, but now they have to write their own story,” Giroud said.

The former forward recalled France’s triumph in 2018, explaining that the current generation faces a different challenge with greater expectations and pressure.

“The first match is always very important. It doesn’t matter too much how you play — in 2018 we needed a fortunate goal to beat Australia — but the most important thing was winning.”

Giroud believes France must make a fast start against Senegal and collect maximum points from their early fixtures.

“We know Senegal well and understand that we need to start strongly. The next game is against Iraq, and we have to win it, but we need six points before facing Norway, who I consider a dangerous opponent.”

The former striker admitted that France are in a competitive group but emphasized that simply reaching the knockout stage is not the team’s main objective.

“France need to finish first, set the pace, make a statement, and reach the level required later in the tournament. Our journey starts now, and I am looking forward to it.”
