England head coach Thomas Tuchel explained the reasoning behind starting Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford in Saturday’s UEFA Nations League clash against reigning world champions Spain.
The most expensive signing in Leeds‘ history made several errors that contributed to England’s 2-3 defeat at Wembley Stadium.
After the match, Tuchel refrained from a detailed critique of Trafford’s performance but elaborated on his overall plan, emphasizing his strong belief that playing two consecutive matches would benefit the goalkeeper.
“I am convinced it’s better to play two matches rather than just one. I am not a specialist in goalkeeping to analyze their performances in detail. However, I believe he earned the right to feature in two games, which is why we gave him that opportunity.
He has started the Premier League season well and is gaining match experience as Leeds’ first-choice goalkeeper. Jordan Pickford made no mistakes, but we want to use this period to assess James’ current level, so he will play in these two fixtures.
I believe playing two matches will help him better understand the team’s organization, learn from what happens on the pitch, adapt more quickly, and become a full part of the team in both defense and attack.
Therefore, he will also start the next match, after which Jordan will return for the two games against the Czech Republic and Croatia at Wembley,” the England manager stated.
Before the game against Spain, Tuchel had announced that Trafford would feature in two of the four matches scheduled during this extended international break, with Jordan Pickford reclaiming the goalkeeper spot for the final two fixtures.
