Van Dijk Surpasses Johan Cruyff as Netherlands World Cup Captain
Virgil van Dijk captained the Netherlands in their third group stage match of the 2026 World Cup against Tunisia, leading the team to a 3-1 victory.
With this appearance, van Dijk surpassed the legendary Johan Cruyff for the most matches played as captain of the Dutch national team in World Cup tournaments.
Van Dijk now has eight such matches under his belt, while Cruyff, along with fellow Dutch legends Johnny van Bronckhorst and Frank de Boer, each have seven.
There is still an opportunity for van Dijk to extend this record further. The Netherlands topped Group F and advanced to the round of 16, where they will face Morocco.
