Wesley Sneijder Questions KNVB’s Appointment of Xavi as Netherlands Coach
Wesley Sneijder, the legendary former Dutch international, has voiced his dissatisfaction with how Xavi was appointed as the head coach of the Netherlands national team. Sneijder found the Royal Dutch Football Association’s (KNVB) approach to selecting the Spanish manager unusual, particularly highlighting Xavi’s limited coaching experience.
Sneijder pointed out the contrast between Xavi’s path to becoming a coach and the usual requirements imposed on other managers in the Netherlands. He emphasized that while Xavi obtained his coaching credentials in just four weeks, anyone within the KNVB typically must complete a four-year course.
“Xavi got his license in four weeks, whereas anyone in the KNVB has to go through a four-year program. I sincerely wish Xavi all the best, but the appointment policy seems strange to me,” Sneijder said, alluding to the early stage of Xavi’s coaching career in Qatar.
“As a coach, he has limited experience,” added the former Dutch international.
Despite these concerns, Xavi’s tenure with the Oranje has started positively. He has overseen two matches without defeat: a draw against Germany, where the team equalized in the final minutes, followed by an away victory over Serbia.
Looking ahead, the Netherlands are set to play two more UEFA Nations League fixtures in October, facing Greece and Serbia once again.
