Qatar Midfielder Assim Madibo Suspended for Five Matches Following Red Card
Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo has been handed a five-match suspension following his red card in the 2026 World Cup match against Canada, according to the Associated Press.
Madibo caused a serious injury to Canadian player Ismael Kone, who suffered fractures to two bones in his lower leg. FIFA’s disciplinary committee decided to ban Madibo for five games.
The incident occurred when Madibo delivered a harsh tackle from behind to Kone’s leg, causing him to collapse on the pitch and unable to get up unaided. The referee immediately showed Madibo a straight red card.
Subsequent medical examinations confirmed that Kone had broken both the tibia and fibula in his left leg. The player underwent surgery and is expected to be sidelined for approximately six months.
Madibo’s suspension will carry over to future international competitions beyond the 2026 World Cup, as Qatar finished last in their group and were eliminated from the tournament.
