Manchester United midfielder Youri Tielemans has issued an apology to his former club after his recent comments stirred some discontent among Aston Villa supporters. The Belgian midfielder transferred from Villa to the Red Devils this summer in a £35 million deal.
Tielemans spent three years at Villa Park, making 134 appearances and scoring 10 goals during his time with the club.
While speaking on Manchester United’s preseason tour, Tielemans praised Aston Villa for helping him “get back to his previous level,” but added, “There are clubs above Aston Villa, and Manchester United is one of them.”
Some Villa fans were unhappy with these remarks, prompting Tielemans to address the situation on Instagram to clarify his intentions.
“I never intended for my recent comments in the press to offend anyone or disrespect the football club Aston Villa, which I hold in high regard and am grateful to for the past three years,” Tielemans wrote on Thursday.
“However, I must admit my mistake and apologize for my choice of words. I will be more careful in the future. I wish the club all the best going forward.”
