Slaven Bilić: We Must Not Aid Spain’s Celebration After Defeat

Croatia head coach Slaven Bilic responded candidly to his team’s heavy 4-1 defeat against Spain in the UEFA Nations League, acknowledging the fairness of the result.

“The scoreline is realistic, but the overall impression is poor. I’m disappointed; it was a tough night for us. It’s easy to make excuses—they are world champions, and conceding early can shake your confidence. However, I didn’t like how we defended: lacking aggression, teamwork, and sacrifice. It felt like they could approach our goal at any moment,” Bilic reflected.

He clearly identified the core reason behind the loss:

“We shouldn’t have come here just to be part of their celebration. Spain is the best team in the world, there’s no debate there. But we made their job too easy by giving them too much space.”
